As a Senior Manager, you will help build, scale and improve the backend of a fast-growing Executive Briefing platform. You will oversee/coach individual contributors and team leads.  You will be responsible for your team’s delivery of high-quality, robust, scalable software solutions to meet the needs of the Cision global organization.  You will aid us in building a real time, scalable, stable platform serving thousands of clients in a reliable and performant manner. You will be using new technologies, to solve hard problems in a friendly and encouraging work environment. You will also be encouraged to share your experience and knowledge, sparring with your colleagues to grow together! 
As a Senior Manager, you will improve our customer’s experience and optimize internal processes for maximum efficiency. With your peers, you will assist in the effort of defining Cision’s development practices. You will work closely with the other Engineering and Product teams to help Cision deliver high quality software to our customers. 

What You'll Do

  • You’ll be responsible for both individual contributors and one or two team leads who will have their own direct reports, all working on the same product.
  • With your team you’ll manage the day-to-day activity. You’ll mostly lead the team SCRUM meetings and other meetings to make sure that everything stays on topic and goals are accomplished.
  • With your team leaders you’ll coach them in their leadership journey and work with them on processes, resourcing and alignment for their team.
  • You’ll be hiring new engineers and team leaders and aligning your teams with the business objectives.
  • You’ll work closely with the product owner and be their technical “point person” for help with understanding and prioritizing the backlog as well as triaging bugs. 
  • You’ll also keep an eye on the team’s sprint overall so you can get a feel for when things aren’t going well.  If they aren’t, you’ll communicate that to the product owner and any other stakeholders and work on reallocating team resources or start creating contingency plans.
  • You’ll be the last line of defense for making sure the team’s work is done. 
  • You’ll verify that the definition of done is met and make sure to hold everyone accountable. 
  • You’ll need to strike the balance for the team between building quality, maintainable software, getting work done that helps the business move forward and going down endless rabbit holes of refactoring to achieve code perfection. 
  • You’ll facilitate cross team communication to make sure all teams involved have what they need to get work done and any risks are surfaced sooner rather than later.
  • Mentoring and career development will also be a primary concern for you.  Working with management to understand the goals of your team members and delegate work in a safe and controlled way to get them the experience they need without increasing risk on projects.
  • Help design, implement and improve our services while helping us adopt best practices.

Who You Are

  • An experienced people manager with a strong desire to take ownership of the processes and technical future of a mission critical software product.
  • Demonstrated track record working with Product, other departments, and other areas of IT.
  • Hands-on and proactive, with a wealth of experience handling cross-department stakeholders.
  • Enjoy working with team members, while at the same time making decisions that fit the overarching goals and deadlines.

What You Have

  • 2-4 years of experience managing teams of software engineers.
  • Proven experience coaching/mentoring engineers in an Agile environment
  • Minimum 7-10 years of experience in software development, commercial software and methodologies is required. Broad exposure working on a variety of platforms is required.
  • Good knowledge of C# and ASP.NET Webforms.
  • Experience with relational databases, preferably MySql.
  • Good knowledge of RESTful APIs, their design and implementation.
  • Preferably a working knowledge of bulk email sending and email deliverability, including SPF records and DKIM/DMARC.
  • Demonstrated experience with modernizing a legacy code base and instituting DevOps practices.
  • A willingness to roll up your sleeves and help debug when customers need help ASAP and experience helping your teams make sure those incidents don’t happen again.
  • Some experience working with or managing teams in other countries is a big plus, you’ll be juggling time zones.
